Descendants of Richard Leir

Generation No. 7

12. THOMAS MACIE7 LEIR (THOMAS V6, THOMAS IV5, THOMAS III4, THOMAS II3, THOMAS I2, RICHARD1) was born November 19, 1795, and died November 26, 1864. He married ANNE COLLARD 1822, daughter of JOHN COLLARD. She was born 1798, and died December 25, 1863.

Notes for T
HOMAS MACIE LEIR:
Thomas Leir V's diary speaks of his son, Thomas Macie Leir, being educated at Rugby.
- - - Gilbert Williams-Leir (February 3, 2003)

Margaret says TML that he was not banished by his mother - she was most upset that he had gone there amongst 'such a base society'. The Jane Leir letter to her son in Dec 1838 indicated her sorrow that they would not be at Weston and Jaggards at Christmas.
- - - Anthony Leir-Shuffrey

TL V did not leave all to his eldest son Thomas Macie Leir 1795-1864. Three unmarried daughters controlled Weston until the death of sister Anne in 1877. Meanwhile another daughter, Mary, had married Rev Edward Wilkins, ?-1876, and under Anne's will their son Edward Wilkins inherited, on condition he took the name Leir. Hence the Wilkins-Leirs.
Robin Leir-Nicolson's (RLN) research indicates that TML may have had a
relationship with a Diana Ham - a name mentioned in his will. Recent perusal
of RLN records seem to suggest that TML's son died whilst staying with Thomas
Ham Macie Leir. The latter was the sole executor for the former. I am hoping
that I can soon go to Southampton and examine Census returns for 1891 which
COULD give a birth place for THML. And thus a birth certificate MIGHT be
forthcoming.
The descendants of THML are what RLN call the Leirs of
Southampton, not those born from Ann Collard.
RLN has evidence to suggest that another Leir -
possibly a son from Ann Collard lived in Southampton for a while.

  Notes for HENRIETTA ANNE CARLETON:
The story goes back to a Guy Carleton, who commanded the British Army in Canada, and later was in government, during the period 1766 to 1796, from the American Revolution until the French Revolution, both of which led to fighting in Canada. He did so well that George III made him Baron Dorchester. A century later, the fourth Baron had no heir, and the title went to his second cousin, Henrietta Anne Carleton, who became Baroness Dorchester; she married Major-General Richard Langford Leir, and they hyphenated the name to Leir-Carleton. This was her second marriage, in 1887. If Guy Carleton had not done so well, there would be no such place as Canada, and the US would be twice the size. His family is traced back to Baldwin de Carleton, "who was settled at Carleton, near Penrith, Cumberland, at the Conquest". Carleton County and Carleton University in Ottawa get their names from Guy Carleton.
