Notes for HENRIETTA ANNE CARLETON: The story goes back to a Guy Carleton, who commanded the British Army in Canada, and later was in government, during the period 1766 to 1796, from the American Revolution until the French Revolution, both of which led to fighting in Canada. He did so well that George III made him Baron Dorchester. A century later, the fourth Baron had no heir, and the title went to his second cousin, Henrietta Anne Carleton, who became Baroness Dorchester; she married Major-General Richard Langford Leir, and they hyphenated the name to Leir-Carleton. This was her second marriage, in 1887. If Guy Carleton had not done so well, there would be no such place as Canada, and the US would be twice the size. His family is traced back to Baldwin de Carleton, "who was settled at Carleton, near Penrith, Cumberland, at the Conquest". Carleton County and Carleton University in Ottawa get their names from Guy Carleton. -from Burke's Peerage, under "Dorchester". - courtesy of Gilbert Leir (January 31, 2000) |
