Thomas V's diary has been transcribed and appears elsewhere on this site.
The diary is full of
quarrels with his brothers over his father's will. He got along much
better with his wife's family.

i. | JANE ELIZABETH7 LEIR, d. 1871, Unmarried. |
Notes for JANE ELIZABETH LEIR: According to Gilbert Leir: Jane's will stipulated that any heir must take the name Leir. The first inheritor after she died in 1871 was her sister Mary who had married a Wilkins, headmaster of King Edward's School in Bath; Mary survived until 1876. The last of the Wilkins-Leirs died in 1922, and that was when Gilbert Leir's grandfather, Edmund Jekyll, took over at Weston. Gilbert Leir has a photocopy of the deed-poll by which Edmund took the name Leir. In one of Margaret Shuffrey's letters from Jane Elizabeth to Thomas Macie Leir, Jane says that Jaggards looked deserted and melancholy. Margaret agreed when she visited Jaggards. |
ii. | ANNE LEIR, d. 1877, Unmarried. |
Notes for ANNE LEIR: TL V did not leave all to his eldest son Thomas Macie Leir 1795-1864. Three unmarried daughters controlled Weston until the death of sister Anne in 1877. Meanwhile another daughter, Mary, had married Rev Edward Wilkins, ?-1876, and under Anne's will their son Edward Wilkins inherited, on condition he took the name Leir. Hence the Wilkins-Leirs. - Gilbert Leir
