Notes for ROBERT BECKET MARRIOTT LEIR: Passing to your enquiry about the Leir who died at Dunkirk: he is commemorated on a plaque in Charlton Musgrove church; I saw it in about 1980. The name was, I think, Robert Marriott Leir. What struck me about this was that he was described as the *last* lineal descendant of the Leirs. I am sorry to see an error perpetuated, and I wrote to the widow, Mrs. Juliana Vilma Leir, in care of the Rector of Charlton Musgrove, about it. She kindly sent me some genealogical material, but I still do not know how RML connects on to the tree. She died in 1981. If you can find out, please tell me. - Gilbert Williams-Leir I was certainly not aware of any that did. It is odd that I went through the War Graves site and no Leir was mentioned. I have expected a Leir to have fallen during the Great War but to my knowledge none did. - Robin Leir-Nicholson Robert Beckett husband of V. did not die at Dunkirk. 99.99% certain he died c 1960s c Brighton area. he was a lay reader at Charlton. I have details of his will. Have quite a lot of detail re brothers. sad-very sad- episode of his father's suicide which in effect marked the end of the Leir's at Charlton. Shocking funeral details and inquest. None of children married to produce present day cousins. - Robin Leir-Nicholson . |
