8. THOMAS III4 LEIR (THOMAS II3, THOMAS I2, RICHARD1) was born September 28, 1702, and died August 23, 1781. He married ELIZABETH METHUEN 1733, daughter of PAUL METHUEN and SARAH GOULD. She was born 1712, and died June 5, 1783.

HOMAS III LEIR:
Mary Freke, a rich young heiress of Hinton St. Mary in Whiltshire, married firstly Dr. Christopher Coward, doctor of divinity, the younger son of a rich family, who became Rector of Ditcheat in 1667. In the same year he carried out extensive alterations to Ditcheat Priory. He died in 1699 and is buried in the Ditcheat churchyard.

His position as Rector was taken over by Thomas Leir, elder son of the Rector of Charlton Musgrove. At 27 he was at Oxford where he was a fellow of his college and its chaplain.

Within the same year of 1699 Mary Coward married Thomas Leir at her home in Hinton St. Mary, and they returned to live in the Priory now known as Abbey House.

Their daughter- in-law Elizabeth Methuen was the daughter of a wealthy clothier of Bradford-on-Avon.
