Clear Coat

I put 4 oz. (West) glass on the foredeck and tanks when I refinished Lindsay 7151 last summer. The guys at West Systems said the cloth would make the finish much more durable and strengthen the foredeck. They calculated the glass would add 1 1/2 pounds and were probably pretty close.

I used the West hardener designed for clear coat, it might have been 207. One layer of epoxy was applied under the glass on bare wood, one with the glass, and two on top of it. This was followed by brushing 4-5 layers of clear high gloss (UV protected) Interlux Interthane Plus. The Interthane, like the West cures to a flexible state and dents rather than chips when abused. The cloth turns clear when wetted. It can be seen in the final finish only if you know what to look for.

I received most of the finishing information I used from the West manuals and their technical support line. The West guys were knowledgeable and always ready to help. I chose Interlux over Awlgrip just because the Interlux sounded easier to apply; it could be brushed, they had a tech support line, and the West guys said it was a good choice. (It's also not cheap.)
